Italdenim produces high quality denim using ecological and environmentally friendly production processes. Italdenim has abandoned the traitional technique of processing yarn to make jeans because it uses large quantities of water – about 300 liters per kg of fabric – and of energy to heat the water itself so it is quite wasteful of this precious resource. The process also requires cleaning chemicals that have a considerable negative impact on the quality of waste water. They now use a more natural method to process yarn for jeans, using an agent called Chitosan. Chitosan is a polymer of organic and renewable origin, obtained by processing of food waste (crustaceans). The use of chitosan allows to drastically reduce both the consumption of water and energy required, and thus reduce the use of detergents, bleaches and other chemical agents.
